Pioneering Whole Person Care

Dr. Gregory Jantz, founder of The Center • A Place of HOPE, created Whole Person Care in the early 1980’s. He noticed that other programs were treating just the symptoms of an individual’s disorder or addiction. This type of narrowly focused treatment was not providing long-lasting care – complete recovery and freedom from one’s disorder – needed to define true success.

As a result, Dr. Jantz developed a multidisciplinary treatment approach that cares for the whole person, instead of just the symptoms. Today, Whole Person Care is viewed as critical to improving outcomes.

Whole Person Care:Proven Results for Complete Recovery

Whole Person Care treats the entire you — your mind, body and spirit. It treats all aspects of your life – physical, emotional, nutritional, intellectual, relational, and spiritual – to enable complete healing. In this way, you work through all components of your life that have contributed to your current condition. The result is a deeper, longer-lasting, and more complete recovery.

  • Nutritional Vitality

What you consume each day directly affects your mood. Nutritious, fortifying foods, support your physical and mental health. In order to conquer life’s challenges, we must start with a strategic improvement of the fuel we feed our bodies. This may consist of:

    • Sufficient water each day
    • Limiting sugar and processed foods
    • A variety of fresh fruits and vegetables
    • Whole-grain foods
    • Lean meats, fish, and eggs
    • Nutritional supplements (based on your needs)
  • Intellectual Health

Your ability to focus on what’s important to you — combined with your desire to learn new skills, challenge yourself, and become a critical thinker — can have a direct effect on other aspects of your overall health. By improving your thought processes and challenging yourself you can:

    • Become more motivated on your healing journey
    • Better learn and retain new coping skills
    • Better understand your life challenges
    • Develop an open-mind and become willing to try new things
    • Discover your true needs in life
  • Relational Happiness

Strong relationships with others can be a main source of comfort and gratification in your life. On the other hand, unhealthy relationships can have serious consequences on your emotional health. In order for the the whole person to heal, the following must be addressed:

    • Past or current abuse within your relationship(s)
    • Conflict within past or current relationships
    • Your role in your relationships (independent vs. codependent)
    • Your ability to form connections, communicate, and handle conflict
  • Spiritual Connection

Faith can have a vital role in restoration. If your spirituality is important to you, reconnecting to this part of yourself may create a more hopeful environment for healing. Nurturing faith and spirituality in your life will not only restore hope and healing, but may also remind you:

    • You are not alone
    • You are loved
    • You have a purpose
    • Your life has meaning
    • You make a difference
  • Physical Health

A healthy and strong body provides the mind a sound, stable foundation on which to rebuild the whole person. When you exercise, your nervous system releases “feel good” chemicals like serotonin. Regular, moderate exercise can:

    • Decrease overall levels of tension
    • Elevate and stabilize the mood
    • Improve sleep quality
    • Improve self-esteem
    • Calm worrisome thoughts and jittery feelings
  • Emotional Well-Being

Your emotions, thoughts, and feelings play a key role in how you confront life’s daily challenges. When your thoughts are negative, you may have difficulty coping with whatever life throws your way. Luckily, we all have the power to change how we feel by changing how we think. This may be achieved through (but is not limited to):

    • Dialectical Behavior Therapy
    • Mindfulness
    • Examining and correcting your self talk
    • Adopting an optimistic outlook on life
    • Cognitive defusion
    • Practicing gratitude
