Anxiety Treatment CenterWhat Is Anxiety?
Severe anxiety is much different than the fleeting feelings of fear or worry that pass through every person’s mind when confronted by temporary stress or difficult circumstances. When uncontrolled worry, unfounded fears or episodes of panic persist for months and grow worse over time, anxiety disorder treatment may be necessary. Anxiety treatment is called for when symptoms of anxiety are experienced nearly every day for 6 months or more. These symptoms may include:
- Restlessness, irritability and/or insomnia
- Near-constant worry or dread
- Fear and avoidance of everyday activities
- Fear and avoidance of normal social contact (social anxiety)
- Imagining and dwelling on worst-case scenarios or outcomes in many situations
- Hypervigilance, or obsessively looking for danger signals
- Panic attacks or anxiety attacks
Physical symptoms of anxiety can include a pounding heart, shortness of breath, profuse sweating (not caused by heat or exertion), trembling and twitching, fatigue and gastrointestinal distress such as nausea, diarrhea and irritable bowels. Some anxiety treatment centers emphasize the use of drugs to combat anxiety disorders, but medication alone is not a cure for anxiety. At The Center • A Place of HOPE, we do more than just address the biochemical components of anxiety disorders. We apply our whole-person philosophy to the treatment of anxiety, offering anxiety therapy that also addresses the psychological, emotional and spiritual dimensions of anxiety disorders. A holistic approach to anxiety like the one used by the counselors and staff at The Center is especially important because serious anxiety problems so often occur in conjunction with other conditions such as depression and eating disorders. At The Center, we’re uniquely equipped with an understanding of and experience with a wide range of these and other major life challenges that confront millions of people every year.
