The Role of Magnesium in Optimum Brain Performance

May 16, 2016   •  Posted in:

Let’s get a truth on the table at the outset. Your brain and your cognitive function are not optimized unless each cell has sufficient nutrition to function properly. Said another way, the average American diet is so deficient in many of the critical nutrients needed for the brain, it is almost a given that most of us are not operating with optimally functioning gray matter.

Combine the deficient diet with the pre-disposed tendency to treat ADD and ADHD with Adderall, Ritalin or other pharmaceuticals, and it is easy to see how our physical and mental wellness is being pulled severely off track.

But our focus in this article is to gain understanding on why magnesium is such an important nutrient for your brain – your cognitive function and your brain’s contribution to your mental health. Note this sobering fact: we just mentioned the advent of drugs to treat behavioral issues; there are over 200 popular medications that block our body’s ability to absorb magnesium.[1] Antacids, diuretics, and acid blockers are just a few of the culprits.

With an already deficient diet, many of us take a magnesium supplement, but some forms are not effective and many others are not absorbed well in the body.

Why is magnesium so important for our brain?

Magnesium L-Threonate and the Brain

Magnesium is an essential contributing element for over 300 enzymes involved in biosynthesis processes and energy metabolism. It plays a vital role in many of the brain’s functions. More and more studies are confirming magnesium’s role in combating age related memory loss problems, reducing inflammation and stress on brain cells, and even improving memory in animals. Yet approximately 50 percent of the U.S. population is deficient in magnesium.

In clinical applications, magnesium has been shown to:[2]

Supports healthy levels in the central nervous system
*
Supports healthy synapse function and number
*
Supports restorative sleep
*
Supports cognitive and neurological health*
Supports stress management and a healthy mood*

* These statements have not been approved by the FDA.

The challenge has been to create a formulation of magnesium that can be easily absorbed by the body. Enter Magnesium L-threonate. Recently, a group of scientists from MIT, including a Nobel Prize laureate, worked to create a better form of magnesium to support our overall and cognitive health. Their work resulted in the development of Magtein™. Magtein™ provides all of the benefits of magnesium, but importantly, adds increased bioavailability and minimized gastrointestinal side affects.

MagteinTM is the only magnesium compound that has been shown to effectively raise the brain’s magnesium levels, which leads to enhanced learning abilities, improved working memory, and better short- and long-term memory in both young and aged animals.

Proven Product

MagteinTM has multiple published studies in highly regarded journals reporting its mechanism of action and benefits to cognitive function. As a mental and behavioral health provider, we look to find long-term solutions that minimize prescriptive medicines and incorporate nutrients and supplements as much as possible. When clients arrive at our facility, frequently their diet, sleep patterns and emotional stress make them virtually incapable of receiving quality therapy. To help them get strong enough to fully engage with therapy, we provide a quiet, peaceful sleep environment and set aside ample time for restorative sleep. We prepare healthy, balanced meals high in omega fats, vitamins B, C, D and E, and lean proteins.

We recognize the importance of strengthening the brain. With a well-rested and nutritioned brain, therapy is exponentially more effective. To ensure our clients receive magnesium as part of their dietary plan, we provide Redd Remedies’ Brain Awakening. Brain Awakening contains Magtein™ as well as Amla and Lion’s Mane Fruiting Body. We have seen this combination, created by a master formulator, produce powerful, positive results for our clients. After a few days, we see alertness, focus, and energy. Our clients indicate they feel they can concentrate better and recall events more easily. All this leads to more effective treatment.

Magnesium is not the cure-all for cognitive issues. If you or a loved one has noticed a change in your memory, focus, ability to complete calculations or use your normal vocabulary when speaking, see a physician. You may have a more serious issue that needs diagnosis and potential treatment. But there is no doubt that a healthy diet, fortified with a solid bioavailable form of magnesium has produced strong results in both published studies and in the clients we treat.
