Nutritional Supplements
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) states:
“All adults should take vitamin supplements to help prevent chronic diseases…the daily use of a multivitamin can be a potentially powerful way to improve one’s health…”
This is a great endorsement in the use of multivitamins and other nutritional supplements. However, many ordinary brands of multivitamins provide "bare bones" coverage- not enough to actually improve your health. In fact, many of them, may not be of any value to you. The reason for this is based upon a variety of factors:
- Poor manufacturing conditions/standards/testing-some supplement manufacturers are only concerned about making money, not your health
- The potency of the multivitamins are very limited
- The supplement may not be manufactured for easy assimilation and digestion to save costs
- The multivitamins may not be in a combination that creates the best synergy between the vitamins
- Most popular brands of supplements only meet the recommended minimal Daily Values.
Minimum Daily Values
These minimum amounts are numbers set by the government to reflect "current nutrition recommendations." Basically what his means is that DVs are just enough to prevent major deficiencies, not enough to make any noticeable changes in your health and vitality. Most nutritionist agree that our bodies need much more than the minimal DV to achieve excellent health and to ward off disease. Also, if we have a sickness we need to have more than the minimal DV.
